Headlines

We pride ourselves on the sense of community spirit that informs all the work of the school and this week has exemplified multiple examples of this in action.

The week began with an online presentation to families from Canopy, the UK leader for Google training in education. The evening was organised by Mr Cracknell and offered practical guidance with regard to keeping children safe online. Family controls and the safeguarding of students using any device remain a key part of digital literacy and we hope that the families who attended found it a useful event.

It was a pleasure to welcome Year 9 families into school for the information evening on Tuesday. Thanks to Ms Arif and Mr Kemp for leading the session. We have two more evenings left; firstly, for Year 8 (next week) before Year 10 conclude the schedule the week after.

House assemblies were led by our fantastic Heads of House throughout the week overseen by Mr Keenleyside. It is clear that competition will be fierce throughout the year to see if Shakespeare can retain the coveted House Cup and although we don’t yet have House Quidditch, there are multiple events to come where students will be competing to win those vital points for their houses.

Our community does extend outside the school gates and it was a pleasure to host the staff from Beaumont and Verulam as part of the BSV conference this week. This consortium sees close working at post 16 level and supports so many young people every year to access the broadest possible curriculum. It is great to be able to both support and learn from these two great schools.

Similarly, the school remains a proud member of the Ambition Education Trust. As families who have been linked to the school for a while know, we continue to work in close partnership with 4 other secondary schools and 6 primaries who make up the trust. This relationship allows the sharing of good practice, business efficiencies and ultimately the opportunity for us to be part of an organisation working across Hertfordshire for the benefit of so many students. Mr Gray (CEO) was in school on Thursday, along with Mr Found (Deputy CEO), and it was great to be able to show them in person the calm and purposeful learning environment in action as they walked round the school. Students and staff were equally pleased to see Mr Gray again and it is a real positive for the school to be able to benefit from his expertise and experience as he continues to lead the trust.

Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Sandringham community our friends from Europa International School, located in Seville, Spain who arrived on Thursday as part of this year’s exchange and will be with us over the next week (we have agreed not to discuss recent football results during the visit.) Thanks to Ms Unsain for co-ordinating this experience that offers so much to the young people involved.

We hope that you can all enjoy what looks likely to be another pleasant early autumn weekend.

Getting to Know You: Welcome Miss Nicolaou

Name & Role/subject: Miss Nicolaou - PE Teacher

Background/previous school: I’ve recently moved back to the UK after spending the last four years teaching abroad. During this time, I gained valuable experience teaching in an international setting and working with students from a range of different backgrounds. I’m really excited to be back in the UK and looking forward to bringing the experience I’ve gained abroad into my teaching at Sandringham.

What you’re most looking forward to at Sandringham: I’m most looking forward to getting to know the students, building positive relationships with them and becoming part of the wider school community. I’m also excited to work alongside the PE department and contribute to the sporting life of the school.

Likes/favourite things outside of school: Outside of school, I enjoy keeping active. I also love travelling, going out with friends and family, and trying new restaurants and places. I’m a big football fan and enjoy following sport whenever I can.

One pet peeve or minor dislike: My biggest pet peeve is being stuck in traffic.

Fun/surprising fact about yourself: A fun fact about me is that I love travelling and exploring new places, and I’m always planning my next trip!

If you see Miss Nicolaou around the school or on the sports field, make sure you say hello, and make her feel welcome.

German Exchange Success

German exchange students visited us from the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Gymnasium in Quickborn (Hamburg) last week, and this is what a few students in 9J had to say about it:

It was a great experience - very interesting and fun for everyone. They arrived on Monday 21st September and we met them and learnt their personalities. On Tuesday they went to lessons with us to see what school is like in England. Then at session 5 they made cakes and saw what it was like in the food tech department. Then we watched Paddington in the sandpit. On Wednesday the German students went to the Harry Potter museum. Then on Thursday they went to Windsor castle to see where the royal family lives. After they finished, we all went bowling, which was very exciting. On Friday we walked into St Albans to reenact some scenes from the history of St Albans then we had lunch together.

In the German exchange, there are many things that you can do, for example, going to central St Albans, having lessons with your exchange, watching a movie, and anything you want to do with them on the weekends. You can also arrange things to do with the other exchange students, for example go karting.

It was very interesting to find out what life is like in Germany, and it was very fun hosting the students and in our free time we did so many things, e.g. bowling with the class, go karting, and just playing together.

Student Highlights - Geography Field Trip

Welcome to our new Student Voices feature! This week, one of our students shares their experience and highlights from last week’s geography field trip. We love celebrating our students' work - if you are a budding writer, journalist, or photographer, we warmly encourage you to submit your own reports, reviews, or creative pieces to myself or any of your teachers for a chance to be published in The Sandprint.

Please enjoy Amulya's (Yr 11) write up below of last weeks geography adventure:

On Wednesday, we completed our human questionnaire in Shrewsbury town centre. We spoke to many different people and asked how they would improve congestion. Surprisingly, most people were open to answering our questions. It was a great way to build our social and communicatory skills, even if approaching strangers felt a little awkward at first!

On Thursday, we measured rivers, which was really interesting as we were able to put our knowledge from lessons into a real life experience. The hike there was definitely a challenge, but the views were amazing, and talking with friends along the way made it much more enjoyable!

In the evenings, we went over what we had learnt and looked through the data we had collected. It was interesting seeing all the different answers and thinking about how we could turn them into graphs to present our findings.

On Friday, we reflected on the information we had gathered throughout the trip, focusing on data collection and data presentation and looking at the clear differences between the two. Overall this trip was a blast, and has made me realise how much more there is to geography than what we learn in the classroom.

School Attendance

As the term continues, we are keen to maintain the excellent level of attendance currently being recorded across all years.

As outlined during the information evenings, attendance plays a central part in a student succeeding as a part of the school community and the government are clear about the expectations they have of schools with regard to this issue.

The graphic below makes clear that a cough, cold or sore throat is not in itself a reason to miss school so we would encourage all families to follow these recommendations when deciding if their child should attend school.

LRC NEWS

Banned Books Week

Banned Books week runs from 4 - 10th October and champions the freedom to read without censorship. Throughout history some of the best known works of literature have faced challenges due to the ideas they hold and libraries across the US (and increasingly the UK) are facing co-ordinated challenges to reading material.  A small selection of these classic texts are on display in the LRC and include:

Judy Blume: Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret

JK Rowling: Harry Potter series

Lois Lowry: The Giver

The week raises interesting questions about ‘book banning’:

  • Sometimes objections are connected to beliefs. Should someone be able to request a book’s removal if it goes against their beliefs?
  • If the library only had books everyone agreed on, what would it be like?

We look forward to hearing from our  students…..!
