One thing about working at Sandringham is that we all get used to time moving very quickly due to the sheer number of events and activities taking place every day. This week has been no exception and I am learning that it is a challenge to cover all of them in one set of ‘headlines’.
However, we should start with the students who have returned to school with their usual enthusiasm. It has been great to see so many happy faces enjoying the September sunshine and settling to work already in their lessons.
Outside of classrooms, our wide range of clubs and activities have started already and it has been impressive to see large numbers of students engaging with these before and after school. Everything is organised through SOCS, our dedicated online platform, so please check there to see what’s available and encourage involvement wherever possible. It is a great time to start something new as much as maintaining longstanding interests! As ever, my thanks go to the staff who provide these opportunities.
On Tuesday, and earlier today to end the week, we welcomed families to our first Open Mornings of the year. These events give interested families plenty of chances to experience working life at Sandringham after most saw the school at the Open Evening in July. A special thank you goes to our student guides; who were, as ever, outstanding ambassadors, and the perfect advert for the school. Three more mornings take place next week and bookings indicate that the school remains as popular as ever.
Tuesday also saw the annual year 7 ‘Mob Race’, which is traditionally held at Sandringham for all local secondary schools. It is always a well-attended event, organised brilliantly by our PE faculty, and it was great to see the field full of competitors, staff and family members who turned out to support the runners. We were particularly proud that over 100 Sandringham students represented the school earning both house points and the respect of spectators as they made it to the finish. There were lots of individual successes but special mention goes to Pearl Smith and Grace Hannagan who finished 1st and 4th respectively. Every edition of the Sandpit has full details of the many sporting successes that the school enjoys so we look forward to sharing these through the term.
A busy day was completed with the Year 12 information evening that evening. It was a pleasure to invite families into the school and see a mix of new and returning faces. Thanks to Mr Leat and Mrs Clark for their work in preparing and delivering the material and we hope that attendees left clearer about the year ahead. As mentioned last week, similar evenings are scheduled for all year groups this half term.
On that note our Year 7 Peak District Information Evening took place on Thursday evening with families hearing from Mr Kemp and Ms Picciuto as part of preparations for the forthcoming trip. We followed their input with a social event for our Year 7 students and families organised by FO$$, our brilliant team of community volunteers who lead fund raising events through the year. If you are interested in joining the team and supporting efforts that help support initiatives across the school, to the benefit of all students, we would love to hear from you via admin@sandringham.aetrust.uk. No particular skills are required although, based on yesterday’s event, the ability to grill over 300 sausages to order will be helpful.
Another team of volunteers are our governors, who will meet on Monday for the first time this academic year to review exam outcomes and ensure all is set for the year ahead. We are very grateful for the commitment they show to the school and the key role they play contributing to the school’s ongoing success.
It has been a pleasure to hear from our outgoing Year 13 students as they progress to the next stage of their educational career / working lives and we wish them every success. We look forward to seeing you all before Christmas when you come and collect your examination certificates. This weekend sees the start of many university terms so good luck to families who are ‘moving’ our former students over the next few days.
Finally, and returning to the theme of running, the whole school community wants to wish the best of luck to Mr Ryan, a key member of our fantastic premises team, who is running in the Great North Run this weekend. We know that he never stops moving when on site so we are confident he will make it to the finish line in fine fettle.
Given the event is the world’s biggest half marathon, it may be that others in our community are taking part so good luck to you if it is the case. Whether you are planning similar exertions, or simply planning to sit still and enjoy the September sunshine, we hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing weekend.

One of our students, Uzair, was featured on ITV News for his extraordinary community work with the St Albans Community Pantry (SACP).
As SACP’s very first volunteer, Uzair has been pivotal in helping build and grow the charity over the past six years. Dedicating almost every evening and weekend to helping local families, his continuous dedication and deep empathy for others embody the very best of our school values.
SACP Founder Raihaanah Ahmed has praised Uzair’s commitment, noting how proud she is of the compassion he consistently shows toward the community.

Huge congratulations to Uzair on this well-deserved recognition.

Hertfordshire County Council is currently holding a public consultation regarding proposed additional 20mph speed limits across several residential areas in St Albans, and they are actively seeking feedback from local school families. The consultation aims to assess community views on extending the 20mph network to improve road safety, cut traffic noise, and make walking and cycling to school safer and more accessible. Proposed areas include:
As school communities are directly impacted by local traffic and travel conditions, parent and carer feedback is particularly valuable.
Visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/20mph to view the plans and share your views.
The deadline for consultation closes on Sunday 4 October 2026.

Every year we enter a number of students for a home language GCSE or A level exam. For example, if you speak Polish at home, you might be interested in doing the GCSE.
If you would be interested in completing a GCSE in your home language, please email into reception for the attention of Ms Baikie and Ms Bowman (Exams).
Students are only able to do the GCSE exam in Year 10 or Year 11, we do not enter younger students.
The deadline for expressing interest is Friday 9th October for entry in the Summer 2027 exams. No applications will be accepted after this.

You might notice a very special staff member spending a lot more time at the front of the school!
Mable, our wonderful school therapy dog, is currently hanging out in Mr. Nicholls’ new office right next to Main Reception.
She is incredibly friendly and absolutely loves a quick hello and a gentle stroke, so do feel free to pause and say hi when you’re passing by - it's very hard not to!

The Friends of Sandringham School (FO$S) team works hard behind the scenes to enrich school life. Through pre-loved uniform sales, the Yr 7 Welcome BBQ, Christmas Fairs, and social nights, our brilliant and supportive community comes together to raise vital funds for our students.
Where Your Support Goes - recent fundraising has directly funded:
Sustainability & Connection - beyond fundraising, FO$S champions sustainability through affordable uniform sales and helps families connect across all year groups.

We’re always looking for extra hands, and roles, events, and tasks can easily be shared between friends or pairs of parents to keep things fun and manageable. Whether you'd like to co-run an event, take on a shared committee role (such as Chair, Secretary, or Treasurer as some of our long-standing members prepare to step down), or simply lend 30 minutes on the day to serve drinks or run a stall - every bit of help makes a huge difference.
To get involved please email friendsofsandringhamschool@gmail.com
Other funding support - does your organisation offer support or matchfunding schemes such as Benevity? Please do let us know by emailing Admin@sandringham.aetrust.uk

A boy suffering from amnesia finds himself in an encampment surrounded by wall where half robot creatures hunt the people that live there.
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone. He's surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they came to be there - or what's happened to the world outside.
This week's review by Mia S, Yr 7.
This book was one of my all-time favourite books ever! It was so thrilling and mysterious but also exciting! If I could give a copy of this book to everyone and give them an opportunity to read it, I'm sure they would love it!
