Headlines

Our second Sixth Form Open Morning on Tuesday was another hugely successful and well-attended event, with large numbers of students keen to learn more about life at Sandringham. It was a real pleasure to meet so many prospective students and families, and to see our Yr 12 guides in action. They were excellent ambassadors for both the school and the Sixth Form. Applications continue to come in at a steady pace, and it looks as though we will have another exceptionally strong year group joining us next year.

On Tuesday evening, the annual Battle of the Bands took place. With around 14 bands performing, the audience enjoyed an impressive range of music from students of all ages, and the judges certainly had a difficult task selecting the winners. Congratulations to all of our talented performers, and a special well done to the winners - Junior: The Splinters. Intermediate: Far Away. Senior: Amiicus. Thank you to all the staff who helped make this such a memorable event.

Rehearsals for Velocity have been taking place almost daily, as the show hits the stage next week. It hardly seems a year since the last dance showcase, and with 220 young performers involved, this promises to be our biggest and best production yet. Tickets are understandably in high demand, but the quality of rehearsals suggests audiences are in for a fantastic evening. Good luck to everyone involved!

You may have seen recent coverage in the news regarding mobile phones, particularly smartphones, in schools. This discussion is linked to government concerns around age-appropriate access to social media and the internet for children. The Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, has written to all headteachers outlining her expectations in this area, and it is clear that the landscape is likely to change. Sandringham has already made some key decisions regarding mobile phone use and will continue to monitor developments closely.

And finally, some wonderful news received by our Yr 13 students this week. We have twelve Oxbridge offers, with a few more still waiting to hear. Congratulations to all of those students - both them, and their families are understandably very excited to have received these. A massive thank you to the staff who have supported the students through this process.

Have a great weekend.

House Assembly Week

House Assembly Week was a great celebration of everything our Houses have achieved so far this year. Each House reflected on key highlights, looked ahead to exciting upcoming events, and took time to recognise and celebrate all their brilliant successes.

A strong and inspiring message ran throughout the week, focusing on charity and community, and how we can work together as a school to support those less fortunate than ourselves. Herts for Refugees was placed firmly in the spotlight, with students learning more about the vital work the charity does and how the funds raised by Sandringham make a real difference.

It was a powerful and motivating week that captured the spirit of all our Houses.

OUR YEAR OF READING

Whole School Read - We Want To Hear Your Thoughts?

Following on from our successful launch of our ‘whole school read’ Wildlands, this week’s update reflects how many members of our community are reading this great adventure story.  At the Yr 7 author visit, over 90 students bought a signed copy of Wildlands and we have seen so many of them reading it in tutor time and in their English Library lessons.

The Librarians have issued Wildands to 51 students and there are currently 15 on the reservation list. 25 ePraise awards and badges have been issued to students who have completed reading the book, which is a great start. In addition to this, a range of staff are currently reading Wildlands.

We would encourage you to read the book at home and if any parents do read it, the Library team would love to hear from you and would like to send you a ‘Wildlands’ achievement badge too.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT

AdelAIDE Just Wants to Help, by Melinda Salisbury.

This book is a cautionary tale about the dangers of social media and AI.  Note that it is dyslexia friendly and also a  great quick read for those that want to try a new author out.

Freya desperately wants to be a famous influencer, like her former best friend, Hye-jin, but no matter what she does, her posts flop. Until Freya's stepdad arrives home with AdelAIDE, a home-assistant robot.

It quickly becomes clear that AdelAIDE is much more powerful than other home-assistant technology, and the thing AdelAIDE wants most of all is to help her new owners. Especially Freya.

AdelAIDE has lots of ideas to help Freya boost her profile and get more likes and followers. But when Freya starts to follow AdelAIDE's more radical advice, things quickly spiral out of control...

Anis S in Yr 7 has recently finished this book and comments “This book has characters who are desperately trying to be popular. An amazing book with lots of mystery”
