Headlines

As we reach the end of our first, and longest half-term of the academic year, it’s wonderful to reflect on how much has already been achieved. We are only one-sixth of the way through the year, yet it has been packed with events and opportunities: information evenings for every year group, international exchange visits, Duke of Edinburgh activities, Extended Learning sessions, our first House Week, and a fantastic Jazz Evening, to name just a few highlights.

On Tuesday evening, our talented Music Faculty hosted A Journey Through Jazz in the Main Hall. The event had the energy and flair of Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, with Max MacLaren as compère and musicians performing from different points around the room. The cabaret-style audience seating created a wonderful atmosphere, complemented by refreshments provided by FoSS. The performances were of an exceptional standard, featuring everything from Singin’ in the Rain to Glenn Miller’s In the Mood. Congratulations to all our musicians, and a big thank you to Ms Stothard and the Music Faculty for staging such an inspiring evening.

This week also saw our Year 13 students preparing for early entry university applications to Oxbridge and Medicine. On Tuesday after school, they took part in mock interviews designed to give them valuable experience and feedback ahead of their real interviews. Staff were hugely impressed by their enthusiasm, insight, and maturity in discussion,  we are keeping our fingers crossed for some well-deserved offers in the months ahead.

Last Thursday, the government published the unvalidated Secondary School Performance Tables for the 2025 results. These tables include a wide range of data on Key Stage 4 (KS4) attainment for all schools across England.

This year, there are no progress measures because of the absence of KS2 SAT data, so the focus is entirely on attainment. The key measure, Attainment 8, reflects student achievement across eight key subjects, including English, mathematics, science, humanities, and languages. Another significant indicator is the ‘Gold Standard’ - achieving grade 5 or above in both English and Maths.

We are incredibly proud to share that, when ranked by the percentage of students achieving this Gold Standard, Sandringham is placed 7th highest nationally out of over 3,500 similar non-selective or partially selective schools.

This is an outstanding accomplishment and a reflection of our students’ hard work, the dedication of our staff, and the ongoing support from our families. Congratulations to everyone involved, this remarkable success truly highlights the strength of our school community.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable half-term break.

The problems on the Senior Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

Students that perform well are awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates, with the best performing students being invited to take an additional challenge.

Overall, students achieved the following certificates:

17 Gold

30 Silver

18 Bronze

DEBATE CLUB NEWS

This week Yr 11 historians engaged in a lively debate to assess 'Which power was the main aggressor during the Cold War: USA or USSR'?

Students focused on 4 key hotpots:

  • The Building of the Berlin Wall
  • Cuban Missile Crisis
  • Invasion of Czechoslovakia
  • The Vietnam War

They had to examine who was the main aggressor and most responsible for increasing tensions.  The level of historical detail, contextual understanding and reasoning was superb and seeing the passion and enthusiasm in our students was both inspirational and infectious. We're already planning the next debate!

Well done to Alexa, Maya, Reuban, Gabby, Georgia, Rachel, Evie, Jasmine, Micayla, Ani, Sadie, Freddie, Sorcha and Diego.

SCHOOL NEWS

As we approach the end of the half term, we want to remind students and families of a couple of community notes:

Student safety

We have received several reports from concerned members of the wider community about students crossing the road without awareness of oncoming traffic and riding bikes without due care and attention. We would ask that families remind their children of the need to use the dedicated crossing outside the school and to make themselves as visible as possible if cycling to and from school.

Drop off / pick up

On a similar note, the shorter days mean that there is a greater need for vigilance as students arrive and leave school. We remain concerned that some families continue to park in restricted areas both before and after school and, in doing so, create a further danger to other students as well as often causing obstructions to the drives of local residents. We regularly ask for support in this area and would be grateful for your help with this moving forward.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT

The Ghost of Gosswater by Lucy Strange.

The Lake District 1899. The earl is dead and cruel Cousin Clarence has inherited everything. Twelve-year-old Lady Agatha Asquith is cast out of Gosswater Hall to live in a tiny tumbledown cottage with a stranger who claims to be her father. Aggie is determined to discover her real identity, but she is not alone on her quest.

Sophia E-W, 7F, says: "I enjoyed this book. It had a really good twist. The book tricked me into thinking one thing then revealed something else entirely. I really liked the heroine, Aggie. She has always been very rich and then has to learn ordinary everyday skills like cooking breakfast. She also discovers she has a false family. If I had to describe this book in three words I would choose: Historical. Mystery. Suspense. There are some spooky bits so I think it’s perfect for Halloween!"

LRC TOP READS

A reminder of the LRC's Top Reads to keep you busy over the half term. Through reading, young people are exposed to different cultures, perspectives and experiences which helps to develop emotional intelligence, empathy, and improves mental health. Happy Halloween!

GOLF NEWS

Well done to Natalie and Jack from YR 13 for competing in the Hertfordshire Scratch Golf Tournament last week.

This is the highest level of regional golf and the “scratch” element means that handicaps are not considered and it was all down to gross scores. They were playing against the best of the best from Hertfordshire. Although Jack was a little disappointed with his performance on the day after doing so well at the previous Herts mid-handicap competition (6th Place), he finished a creditable 51st out of 70 competitors with a score of 88. Natalie finished 61st with a score of 92. Natalie was one of the highest handicaps in the competition and should be particularly proud of her +2 Nett score (92).

Thank you both for your contribution to growing golf at Sandringham School.

FOOTBAL NEWS

Yr 11 Boys: A National Cup second round victory for Sandringham as they beat a good Longdean side 2-1. After a slow start, the boys started to move the ball quickly and create more chances. RUGBY NEWS

Yr 8: Last weekend the fixture was Beaumont away. A great advert for schools rugby with a number of stand out performances. Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of a 1 try result having first held up superbly in the last minute, with our opponents going over in the last second. Well done boys, a great game.

Yr 9: This Sandringham team tackled brilliantly and were dominant at the breakdown leading to a 36-0 win v Beaumont. Rajkumar, Hall, Harris (2), Harvey & Dixon go over. Hall conversions (3). The boys are improving week on week.

Yr 10: Despite our best efforts and a positive second half last weekend, our boys lost out to Beaumont School. They worked hard, continued to put their body of the line and played some good phases of rugby. The one score from Yang was fully deserved.

FOOTBALL NEWS

Yr 9 Girls: The U14 Girls Football Team battled through all weathers in their County Cup match against John Henry Newman School. It was a closely fought game, with Sandringham taking a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to goals from B. Foreman and M. Richards. However, JHN fought back to level the scores, leaving the game 2-2 at full time. Extra time saw no change, so the match went to penalties. Stepping up with confidence, F. Randall, A. Dibbs, I. Kelly, M. Richards, and P. Allen all successfully converted their shots. The hero of the hour was P. Allen, who made a crucial save to secure a fantastic win for Sandringham!
