Headlines

This week has been all about Extended Learning Day, which took place on Wednesday. On this special day, we step away from the usual timetable to give students opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Highlights included:

  • Year 7 – enjoying their three-day adventure in the Peak District
  • Year 8 – exploring the theme ‘Build Your Legacy’
  • Year 9 – taking part in ‘Sandringham does the Apprentices’
  • Year 10 – focusing on Personal Development
  • Year 11 – team-building at Fairland Lakes
  • Year 12 – team-building closer to home
  • Year 13 – preparing for life beyond school with UCAS and Futures

A big thank you goes to Ms Borman for leading the day, Mr Kemp and Ms Batten for organising the Peak District trip, and to all staff who supported activities. Your efforts made the day a real success – well done everyone!

Elsewhere, our Year 11 Geographers took part in their field trip, an essential part of the curriculum and a brilliant chance to experience ‘live’ Geography. Thank you to Ms Prately for making it possible and well done to our students who represented Sandringham so impressively.

In national education news, the DfE has announced plans to introduce a Year 8 reading test, designed to check progress in reading two years into secondary school. If approved, this would join the growing list of assessments young people take during their school journey:

  • Reception – Baseline assessment
  • Year 1 – Phonics screening check
  • Year 4 – Times tables check
  • Year 6 – SATs (English & Maths)
  • Year 8 – Proposed reading test
  • Year 11 – GCSEs and other Level 2 qualifications
  • Year 13 - A-levels, T-levels and other Level 3 national exams

At Sandringham, we already carry out regular reading assessments and strongly believe that reading fluency is central to success across the curriculum. We will, however, need to think carefully about how a national test fits alongside our current approach to ensure students don’t face assessment overload.

Thank you, as always, for your support. Wishing you a restful and enjoyable weekend.

CHARITY NEWS - RSPCA WEEK

RSPCA Week

Join us in celebrating RSPCA Week from Monday 29 September - Friday 3 October.

This is a fantastic opportunity for primary and secondary schools to get involved with the world’s oldest and largest animal welfare charity.

Sadly, the RSPCA is facing an unprecedented crisis with record numbers of abandoned pets needing homes. In July alone, the RSPCA cared for 1,646 dogs, which is more than double the number from 2020, alongside countless cats, rabbits, and other animals. With centres full, the charity is urgently appealing for fosterers and adopters to step forward.

Fostering is free and non-committal – a short term way to help an animal in need.
Adoption gives a pet a forever home and frees up vital space for rescues.

Every adoption or foster placement makes a huge difference.

How you can help:

  • Consider fostering or adopting an animal.
  • Share rehoming profiles to spread the word.
  • Visit the RSPCA’s Find a Pet page to see animals in need of homes.

“Every adoption frees up vital space for us to rescue another animal in urgent need.” RSPCA

This RSPCA Week, let’s try to work together to give abandoned animals the happy futures they deserve.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT

The Island by C.L. Taylor

But when their guide dies of a stroke leaving them stranded, the trip of a lifetime quickly turns into a nightmare. Because someone on the island knows each of the group’s worst fears. And one by one, they’re coming true. Seven days in paradise. A deadly secret.

Who will make it off the island alive?

Elodie S has recently read the book and comments: “It is an amazing book. Full of suspense, mystery and full of plot twists every time you turn a page.”
